Episode 2: I Said I'm Gonna Pilot it!
Next
Two more Gunmen attack Simon, Kamina and Yoko on the surface.  Simon is frightened and tries to run away.  As if sensing his emotions, the Lagann loses power and won’t respond anymore.  Things looked dire as Yoko also runs out of  ammo, but Dayakka and her other comrades from her village come to her aid.  Their concentrated gunfire brings down one of the Gunmen.  The pilot, identified by Yoko as a Beastman, evacuates and runs away with the remaining Gunmen.  Yoko explains that all the Gunmen are piloted by Beastmen.  Every morning they come to their village hunting for humans and then return at night.

That night while gazing at the stars, Kamina talks about his father who had come to the surface before him in search of the same open skies.  They are visited by Leeron, the somewhat eccentric mechanic and technician of Yoko’s village.  He is fascinated by the Lagann and his analysis shows it holds a great amount of power.  Simon begins blushing when Yoko gets close to him.  The drill bit reacts and begins glowing, allowing Simon to move the Lagann again.  With the Lagann’s power, Simon hauls the wreckage of the destroyed Gunmen along with everybody back to Yoko’s village of Ritona. The people of Ritona were forced to the surface when something happened to their underground city.  But the Gunmen awaited them on the surface, so they were forced to fortify their new village and fight them.

After a night’s rest, Simon and Kamina awaken to the sound of explosions.  The Beastmen from the day before are back again, this time with their Captain Kyuzaki who pilots a large red Gunmen.  Simon realizes that it was the Gunmen who caused the earthquakes that killed his parents; his anger powers up the Lagann.  Simon charges the red Gunmen and manages to open its mouth so that Kamina can kick out the Beastman and claim it for himself.  But the Gunmen refuses to recognize Kamina.  The two other enemy Gunmen attack Kamina causing his red Gunmen to fall and unearth the skull of a man they had buried the day before.  Kamina is initially paralyzed with fear but overcomes it and subsequently gains control over the red Gunmen.  He then has Simon to transform the Lagann into one big drill and throws it at the enemy Gunmen to destroy them in one shot.

Kamina’s Gunmen is badly beaten up, but he claims it as his own and names it Gurren.  Later, he and the other villagers go to rebury the skeleton of the man unearthed in the battle.  Kamina suddenly notices a familiar bracelet on the skeleton’s arm and realizes that it is his father’s corpse.
