Kamina boasts about their victory to the people of Ritona at night. Yoko asks Simon more about Kamina, but some things about Kamina he doesn’t even understand. Kamina buried his father alone, but they are unsure if he ever got over it or not.
The next day, Yoko invites Kamina to go hunting with her, but is disappointed when he insists brining Simon along too. She tells Kamina about how Ritona was originally built to protect an armoury. A poisonous gas leak forced them to move to the surface. The weapons they are using are over 700 years old, but are their only defence against the Gunmen. Yoko’s rifle is special in that it uses electricity and can use anything from bullets to arrows as ammunition. Because Yoko is the village’s best markswoman, Dayakka gave her the rifle. She allows Kamina to give it a try and he succeeds in hitting a flying racoon creature.
Kamina goes to claim his kill, but finds a second arrow on the racoon. A Beastman comes out from hiding and attacks Kamina with a cleaver. He identifies himself as Viral, a member of the Human Extermination Squad. He was sent to investigate this area after news came that the human resistance had captured a Gunmen. Kamina arms his katana and fights Viral, but appears to be losing. Their battle is interrupted when Simon crashes in on the Lagann. Viral rushes back to his Gunmen and powers up. Kamina and Simon hurry back to activate the Gurren and face Viral in a Gunmen battle. However, Viral is far more skilled than Simon and Kamina, and easily counters all their attacks. Viral uses a beam weapon mounted on his head to finish them off, but Simon was able to dig a hole using the Lagann and saves them.
That night, Kamina lectures to Simon about not running away and facing the enemy head on. Yoko asks him to let her pilot in Simon’s place, but Kamina won’t allow it. The next day, Kamina waits at the entrance to Ritona with the others ready to defend their home as well. Viral lands with his Gunmen and fights Kamina. Despite his best efforts, the Gurren is still no match for Viral’s Gunmen. Simon thinks its hopeless, but Yoko tells him to follow Kamina’s example and keeping fighting no matter what. When Viral is about the finish Kamina off with the beam weapon, Simon launches a surprise attack in the Lagann and deflects the shot. Kamina tells Simon they will perform a gattai (uniting transformation) and crudely plunges the Lagann into Gurren’s head. Viral thought it was utter stupidity when a special ability of the Lagann activates and actually does transform them into the Gurren-Lagann. All previous damage are repaired and the Gurren-Lagann is also equipped with new drill weapons. Kamina quickly bests Viral’s Gunmen and even takes its helmet for the Gurren-Lagann. Faced with defeat, Viral launches a last salvo of missiles and disappears in the smoke.
Later, while everyone is celebrating, Leeron discovers the return coordinates to the Beastmen base programmed into the Gurren. Kamina decides to take the fight to the Beastmen and leaves Ritona with Simon. Leeron volunteers to go with them as their mechanic and Yoko joins them as well with best wishes from Dayakka.
