Characters Simon
Simon is the main protagonist and pilots the small Gunmen
which he discovered underground and named Lagann. When Simon
first appeared in the show, he was timid and cowardly, but looked up to
Kamina who always seemed confident in everything he does.
Simon began to gain confidence as he fought alongside his
“aniki”, Kamina, against the beastmen, but reverted
when Kamina was killed fighting one of the Four Generals. It
wasn’t until he met Nia that Simon found a new reason to keep
on fighting and became the leader of Dai Gurren, the team Kamina formed
to fight the beastmen. Although Simon had fallen in love with
Nia, he initially had a crush on Yoko, but put aside his feelings when
he realized she loved Kamina. The small mole creature riding
on Simon’s shoulder is Boota, a pet and companion who stayed
with Simon throughout his journey. Simon's name is derived from the word shimo in Japanese, meaning 'below.'Kamina
Kamina is a very passionate young man and a rebel. Like Simon he
was born in Jiiha village, but was convinced to head to the surface
because it is where his father went. After he and Simon made it to the
surface with the help of Yoko, he formed the Dai Gurran brigade to
fight the beastmen. Although he soon discovered his father had died on
the surface, this did not deter him from continuing down his own path.
Kamina was the first human to hijack an enemy Gunmen which he later
names the Gurren. Together with Simon’s Lagann, they can
transform into the Gurren Lagann. But during heavy fighting against one
of the Four Generals, Thymilph, Kamina lost his life, causing a severe
loss of morale in Dai Gurren and hitting Simon especially hard. Yoko
had a crush on Kamina, but only admitted it to Kamina on the eve before
his final battle. Kamina's name is derived from the word kami in Japanese, meaning 'above.'Yoko
Yoko is an expert markswoman and is first seen fighting
the Gunmen which fell into Jiiha village with a high powered
rifle. She is easily the most rational of the group and often
bickers with Kamina about his brashness. Despite this, Yoko
developed feelings for Kamina and eventually confessed to him.
However, Kamina soon died in battle, leaving Yoko in a
depression. She saw Simon in a new light after he swore to
protect her in Kamina’s place in their battles against the
beastmen. Yoko's name comes from the Japanese word for 'beside.' |
