OverviewTengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (天 元突破グレンラガン) is an anime which was produced by Aniplex and Konami and animated by Gainax. 'Gurren Lagann' actually refers to the protanganist's mecha in the shows. Tengen Toppa translates as "Break Through Heaven" and refers to the way way in which the heroes of the show keep aiming for higher and greater achievements. Gurren Lagann first aired from April to September 2007 on Japan's TV Tokyo network and spanned a total of 27 episodes. The show was written by Kazuki Nakashima and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, who was involved in such works as FLCL (Fooly Cooly) and the End of Evangelion movie. Although the show is technically a mecha genre anime, it also sports an excellent cast of characters, a highly intriguing plotline and tons of over-the-top action sequences. The unique style and originality of Gurren Lagann quickly made it a top favorite of the 2007 titles amongst anime fans. While the anime was still airing in Japan, the license rights for North American distribution was already grabbed by ADV Films. Hopefully, as the anime is spread through Western audiences, it can gain even more popularity and earn a place in the hearts of new anime fans. |
